Role of nitric oxide in biological effects of vascular endothelial growth factor

摘要: To evaluate the role of nitric oxide in the biological effects of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and the possible mechanism of VEGF, the cultured vascular endothelial cells of rabbit aorta were divided into control group, VEGF-treated group and VEGF+ -nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME)-treated group. The absorbance () value of vascular endothelial cells and the levels of prostaglandin (PGI), endothelin-1 (ET-1) and von Willebrand factor (vWF) in the supernatant were observed by water-soluble tetrazolium salt assay, radioimmunoassay and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The values and PGI in VEGF-treated group and VEGF+L-NAME-treated group were higher than those in control group (<0.05 and <0.01). The ET-1 and vWF were significantly decreased in VEGF-treated group and VEGF+L-NAME-treated group compared with the control (<0.05 and <0.01). These results indicate that VEGF could promote the proliferation and secretion of PGI and inhibit the secretion of ET-1 and vWF in vascular endothelial cells and that L-NAME could inhibit the effect of VEGF partially. Nitric oxide is an important mediator in the process of stimulating proliferation and regulating secretion of vascular endothelial cells by VEGF.

Potential hybrid feedstock for biodiesel production in the tropics

摘要: Recently, mixture of different oils at various proportions have been used as feedstock for biodiesel production. The primary aim is to improve fuel properties which are strongly influenced by the fatty acid composition of the individual oil that makes up the feedstock mix. The tropics are renowned for abundant oil-bearing crops of which palm kernel oil (PKO) from palm seed and groundnut oil (GNO) are prominent. This present paper investigated biodiesel production from hybrid oil (HO) of PKO (medium carbon chain and highly saturated oil) and GNO (long carbon chain and highly unsaturated oil) at 50/50 (v/v) blending. The principal fatty acids (FAs) in the HO are oleic (35.62%) and lauric acids (24.23%) with 47.80% of saturated FA and 52.26% of unsaturated FA contents. The chemical conversion of the oil to methyl ester (ME) gave 86.56% yield. Fuel properties of hybrid oil methyl ester (the HOME) were determined in accordance with standard test methods and were found to comply with both ASTM D6751 and EN 14214 standards. The oxidative stability, cetane number and kinematic viscosity (KV) of HOME were observed to be improved when compared with those of GNO methyl ester from single parent oil, which could be accredited to the improved FA composition of the HO. The KV (3.69 mm /s) of HOME obtained in this paper was remarkably low compared with those reported in literature for most biodiesels. This value suggests better flow, atomization, spray and combustion of this fuel. Conclusively, the binary blend of oils can be a viable option to improve the fuel properties of biodiesel feedstock coupled with reduced cost.

Ternary phase behavior of water microemulsified diesel-palm biodiesel

摘要: This paper aims to develop a new microemulsions system comprising diesel and palm oil methyl ester (PME) that have the potential to be used as alternative fuels for diesel engines. The water-in-diesel-biodiesel microemulsions were prepared by applying PME mixed with diesel, non-ionic surfactants, co-surfactants and water to make the water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsion system. This microemulsified fuel was achieved through low-energy microemulsification by using the constant composition method. The diesel used was mixed with four different concentrations of PME, i.e., 10% (w/w) (B10), 20% (w/w) (B20), 30% (w/w) (B30) and neat diesel (B0). The amount of water was fixed at 20% (w/w). The phase behavior of the water/mixed non-ionic surfactant/diesel-PME system were studied by constructing pseudoternary phase diagrams with the goal of formulating optimized systems. The results showed that the microemulsions were formed and stabilized with a mixture of non-ionic surfactants at a weight ratio of 80:20 at 20% (w/w), and with mixed co-surfactants at a weight ratio of 25:75, 20:80 and 10:90 for B0, B10, B20 and B30 respectively. The particle size, kinematic viscosity at 40°C, refractive index, density, heating value, cloud point, pour point and flash point of the selected water-in-diesel microemulsion were 19.40 nm (polydispersity of 0.12), 2.86 mm /s, 1.435, 0.8913 g/mL, 31.87 MJ/kg, 7.15°C, 10.5°C and 46.5°C respectively. The corresponding values of the water-in-diesel-PME selected were 20.72 nm to 23.74 nm, 13.02 mm /s to 13.29 mm /s, 1.442, 0.8939 g/mL to 0.8990 g/mL, 31.45 MJ/kg to 27.34 MJ/kg, 7.2°C to 6.8°C, 8.5°C to 1.5°C and 47.5°C to 52.0°C. These preliminary findings were further studied as potential fuels for diesel engines.

Toughening of vinyl ester resins by two-dimensional MXene nanosheets

摘要: Two-dimensional nanosheets are highly effective tougheners for vinyl ester resins. The toughening effect is related to the high specific surface area and unique two-dimensional planar structure of the nanosheets. In this study, a coupling agent γ-(2,3-epoxypropoxy) propytrimethoxysilane (Kh-560) was used to modify MXene nanosheets (M-MXene) for use in toughening vinyl ester resin. The mechanical properties, including the tensile strength, flexural strength, Young’s modulus and elongation, of neat vinyl ester resin and vinyl ester resin modified with MXene and M-MXene were investigated. The results showed that modification significantly improved the mechanical properties of the vinyl ester resin. The tensile and flexural strengths of the MXene-nanosheet-modified vinyl ester resin were 27.20% and 25.32% higher, respectively, than those of the neat vinyl ester resin. The coupling agent improved the interfacial compatibility between the MXene nanosheets and vinyl ester resin, which resulted in the tensile and flexural strengths of the M-MXene-nanosheet-modified vinyl ester resin being 52.57% and 54.60% higher, respectively, than those of the neat vinyl ester resin for a loading quantity of nanosheets of only 0.04 wt %, which is economically viable. The main mechanisms by which the nanosheets toughen the resin are crack deflection and crack pinning.

The prediction of adsorption isotherms of ester vapors on hypercrosslinked polymeric adsorbent

摘要: Adsorption isotherms of methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, propyl acetate, isopropyl acetate and ethyl propionate on hypercrosslinked polymeric resin (ND-100) were measured at 303K, 318K and 333K,respectively, and well fitted by Dubinin–Astakhov (DA) equation. The plots of the adsorbed volume ( ) versus the adsorption potential ( ) at three different temperatures all fell basically onto one single curve for every ester. A predicted model based on DA equation was obtained on the basis of adsorption equilibrium data of methyl acetate, ethyl acetate and ethyl propionate at 318K. The model equation successfully predicted the adsorption isotherms of methyl acetate, ethyl acetate and ethyl propionate on ND-100 at 303K, and 333K, and also gave accurate predictive results for adsorption isotherms of the other two ester compounds (propyl acetate and isopropyl acetate) on ND-100 at 303K, 318K and 333K. The results proved the effectiveness of DA model for predicting the adsorption isotherms of ester compounds onto ND-100. In addition, the relationship between physico-chemical properties of adsorbates and their adsorption properties was also investigated. The results showed that molecular weight, molar volume and molar polarizability had good linear correlations with the parameter (which represents adsorption characteristic energy) of DA equation.

Reaction and characterization of crosslinking hyperbranched poly (amine-ester) with succine anhydride

摘要: Basing on hydroxyl terminated hyperbranched poly (amine-ester)s (HPAEs), the cross-linking reactions and preparation of ester-crosslinked HPAE films were investigated using succine anhydride (SA) as crosslink reagent. It was proved that the cross-linking reaction between HPAE and SA followed a two-step mechanism. This mechanism provides an efficient route to prepare HPAE/SA cross-linked films, in which, the precursor films were prepared by casting HPAE/SA solution at a lower temperature, and then curing the films at a higher temperature. By varying SA content, the solid HPAE/SA films with different cross-linking degrees were prepared successfully. The highest tensile strength of the cross-linked film could reach 59.60 MPa. With all water contact angle smaller than 74.3°, the crosslinked films demonstrated good hydrophilic properties.

Morphological and mechanical characterization of a PMMA/CdS nanocomposite

摘要: Thick film of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/CdS nanocomposite have been synthesized by the solution casting process. The nanostructure of the CdS particles has been ascertained through the small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) technique. The surface morphological characterization of the PMMA/CdS nanocomposite has been done through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The variation of mechanical loss factor (Tan ) with temperature and tensile properties of prepared samples have been studied using Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer (DMA). This study reveals that the glass transition temperature ( ), Young’s modulus, and fracture energy of the PMMA/CdS nanocomposite are greatly influenced by the existence of interfacial energetic interaction between dispersed CdS nanoparticles and the matrix of PMMA.

Best operating conditions to produce hydroxyapatite nanoparticles by means of a spinning disc reactor

摘要: In this work, Mg doped hydroxyapatite (Mg-HAP) nanoparticles were produced by a reaction-precipitation process by using a spinning disc reactor (SDR) at high rotational speed. The production process of these nanoparticles consisted of the neutralization reaction between two aqueous solutions of calcium chloride and ammonia orthophosphate at room temperature. By operating at pH= 10, a high purity Mg-HAP nanoparticles were obtained. In particular, they were 51 nm in average size when the two reagents were fed over the disc symmetrically at 3 cm from the disc center and a rotational speed of the disc reactor equal to 1400 r/min was adopted.

Responses of bacterial strains isolated from drinking water environments to N-acyl-L-homoserine lactones

摘要: Often as a result of biofilm formation, drinking water distribution systems (DWDS) are regularly faced with the problem of microbial contamination. Quorum sensing (QS) systems play a marked role in the regulation of microbial biofilm formation; thus, inhibition of QS systems may provide a promising approach to biofilm formation control in DWDS. In the present study, 22 bacterial strains were isolated from drinking water-related environments. The following properties of the strains were investigated: bacterial biofilm formation capacity, QS signal molecule N-acyl-L-homoserine lactones (AHLs) production ability, and responses to AHLs and AHL analogs, 3-chloro-4-(dichloromethyl)-5-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone (MX) and 2(5H)-furanone. Four AHLs were added to developed biofilms at dosages ranging from 0.1?nmol·L to 100 nmol·L . As a result, the biofilm growth of more than 1/4 of the isolates, which included AHL producers and non-producers, were significantly promoted. Further, the biofilm biomasses were closely associated with respective AHLs concentrations. These results provided evidence to support the idea that AHLs play a definitive role in biofilm formation in many of the studied bacteria. Meanwhile, two AHLs analogs demonstrated unexpectedly minimal negative effects on biofilm formation. This suggested that, in order to find an applicable QS inhibition approach for biofilm control in DWDS, the testing and analysis of more analogs is needed.

Mayenite supported perovskite monoliths for catalytic combustion of methyl methacrylate

摘要: To improve their thermal stability, La Sr MnO cordierite monoliths are washcoated with mayenite, which is a novel Al-based material with the crystal structure of 12MO·7Al O (M= Ca, Sr). The monoliths are characterized by means of nitrogen adsorption/desorption, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Catalytic performances of the monoliths are tested for methyl methacrylate combustion. The results show that mayenite obviously improves both the physic-chemical properties and the catalytic performance of the monoliths. Because mayenite improves the dispersity of La Sr MnO and also prevents the interaction between La Sr MnO and cordierite or -Al O , both crystal structure and surface morphology of La Sr MnO phase can thereby be stable on the mayenite surface even at high temperature up to 1050 oC. Under the given reaction conditions, La Sr MnO monolith washcoated with 12SrO·7Al O shows the best catalytic activity for methyl methacrylate combustion among all the tested monoliths.

Antifungal and antibacterial functions of medicinal leech recombinant destabilase-lysozyme and its heated-up derivative

摘要: Antifungal activity of recombinant medicinal leech destabilase-lysozyme (rec.Dest-Lys) was investigated by using fungi: , and , including yeasts and . Its antibacterial activity was investigated on gram-negative bacteria . These activities were assessed by radial agar diffusion assay, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Therefore, destabilase-lysozyme not only is endo-isopeptidase and lysozyme, but also has antifungal and antibacterial activities. Muramidase activity of rec.Dest-Lys disappeared after heat-treating at 90°C for 50 min without the loss of its antimicrobial activity. Furthermore we showed for the first time that the heated-up derivative of rec.Dest-Lys exhibited more potent activities against the above enumerated fungi and gram-negative bacteria than original protein.

Simultaneous harvesting and cell disruption of microalgae using ozone bubbles: optimization and characterization study for biodiesel production

摘要: In the present study, ozone was introduced as an alternative approach to harvest and disrupt microalgae cells ( ) simultaneously for biodiesel production. At the optimum ozonation conditions (6.14 g·h ozone concentration, 30 min ozonation time, 1 L·min of ozone flowrate at medium pH of 10 and temperature of 30 °C), the sedimentation efficiency of microalgae cells increased significantly from 12.56% to 68.62%. It was observed that the microalgae cells aggregated to form flocs after pre-treated with ozone due to the increment of surface charge from –20 to –6.59 mV. Besides, ozone had successfully disrupted the microalgae cells and resulted in efficient lipid extraction, which was 1.9 times higher than the control sample. The extracted microalgae lipid was mainly consisted of methyl palmitate (C16:0), methyl oleate (C18:1) and methyl linolenate (C18:3), making it suitable for biodiesel production. Finally, utilization of recycled culture media after ozonation pre-treatment showed robust growth of microalgae, in which the biomass yield was maintained in the range of 0.796 to 0.879 g·h for 5 cycles of cultivation.

HPLC determination of glyoxal in aldehyde solution with 3-methyl-2-benzothiazolinone hydrazone

摘要: Based on the absorption property of a diazine that can be formed by reaction of glyoxal and 3-methyl-2-benzothiazolinone hydrazone (MBTH) in the Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectral region, a HPLC method was developed for the determination of glyoxal in acetaldehyde solution. Glyoxal was derivatised from MBTH and the derivatives (diazine) were analyzed by HPLC for identification and quantification. The determination was performed on a ZORBAX Eclipse XDB-C18 column (4.6 × 250 mm, 5 mm) at 35°C with an injection volume of 10 mL, using a mixture of acetonitrile-water solvent (99∶5, v∶v) as a mobile phase with a flow rate of 0.8 mL·min . The proper derivative reaction conditions were the temperature of 70°C, MBTH to carbonyl molar ratio of 12, and reaction time of 110 min. The glyoxal diazine was a yellow dye with a maximum molar absorptivity at 401 nm and its retention time was 5.2 min under optimal HPLC conditions. The standard curve for glyoxal had a strong linear relationship with a regression coefficient ( = 0.999) in the range of 0.002–0.020 g·L . The analysis of glyoxal in an oxidising solution gave accurate results with a relative standard deviation (RSD) value of 0.55%. The average relative recovery was 102%. This efficient HPLC technique is also proposed for detecting other dicarbonyl compounds besides glyoxal.

Beneficial effect of arginine vasopressin on hemorrhagic shock through improving the vascular reactivity

摘要: The vascular reactivity and calcium sensitivity were decreased following hemorrhagic shock. Arginine vasopressin (AVP) was beneficial to endotoxic, infectious/septic and hemorrhagic shock. Our previous studies found that Rho kinase played an important role in the occurrence of calcium desensitization following shock. It was reported that AVP was with stimulation effect of Rho kinase. So we hypothesized that AVP might have beneficial effect on shock via activation of Rho kinase to regulate the calcium sensitivity and vascular reactivity. Hemorrhagic shock (40 mmHg for 2 h) Wistar rats were adopted to observe the effects of small dose of AVP on hemodynamics, 24-h survival rate, the pressor effect of norepinephrine (NE) and the contractility of superior mesenteric artery (SMA). Isolated SMAs from hemorrhagic shock rats were adopted to observe the effects of AVP on vascular reactivity and calcium sensitivity and its relationship to Rho kinase with an isolated organ perfusion system. The results show that AVP at the concentration of 0.1 U/kg and 0.4 U/kg significantly improved the hemodynamic parameters and the 24-h survival rate of hemorrhagic shock rats. Meanwhile, these dosages of AVP significantly increased the pressor effect of NE and the contractile response of SMA to NE. Y-27632 (3 ?g/kg), a Rho kinase specific inhibitor, abolished the beneficial effects of AVP. , the calcium sensitivity and vascular reactivity of SMA to calcium and NE were significantly decreased following hemorrhagic shock. AVP at the concentration of 0.5 nmol/L and 5 nmol/L significantly increased the calcium sensitivity and vascular reactivity. These effects of AVP were abolished by Y-27632 (10 ?mol/L). Taken together, the results suggest that AVP at 0.1 U/kg and 0.4 U/kg is beneficial to hemorrhagic shock by improving the vascular reactivity, which involves activation of Rho kinase.

Kinematic calibration of precise 6-DOF stewart platform-type positioning systems for radio telescope applications

摘要:

The pose accuracy of a parallel robot is a function of the mobile platform posture. Thus, there is no a single value of the robot’s accuracy. In this paper, two novel methods for estimating the accuracy of parallel robots are presented. In the first method, the pose accuracy estimation is calculated by considering the propagation of each error, i.e., error variations are considered as a function of the actuator’s stroke. In the second method, it is considered that each actuator has a constant error at any stroke. Both methods can predict pose accuracy of precise robots at design stages, and/or can reduce calibration time of existing robots. An example of a six degree-of-freedom parallel manipulator is included to show the application of the proposed methods.
